REVIEW: BHOOKH – THE MYSTERY, IS TRULY CREATING HUNGER FOR THE AUDIENCES
Film: Bhookh – The Mystery (Hindi)
Director: Kiran Kundu
Cast: Sunny, Gautam, Manoj, Tikam and others
Yes! After many days of the lull here comes a Hindi flicker, a complete full-scale Hindi Feature Film from North Bengal. Yes, you heard it right. It’s Hindi and we can’t tell whether it’s the first Hindi feature film from this region or not because many of the releases go unnoticed even from the viewers. That’s the state of filmmaking here in this region. That’s the promotions made for that production made from here. Many local dialects (local languages) films were created over the last 15 years and almost all of those gone into oblivion soon after their release. Mind it, we are talking about Censor Board recognized films and not those which were released on CDs or DVDs and shown in illegal shanty video halls throughout North Bengal. Talking about this film ‘Bhookh – the mystery’ we can say it’s a brilliantly executed project and not merely a good attempt. We should not talk about the hardships which the director have gone through while accumulating non-professional resources like supporting artists, technicians, the absence of low-cost equipment or the hostile red tapism. We also should not talk about how the unit managed such a full-length 2-hour thriller with such a shoestring budget of Rs. 25 lakhs. Above all, we should not talk about the passion, dedication and enthusiasm of the film crew, artist and the makers despite knowing how the market is going to behave with post-release. However, we are here to tell you something in black and white. If we go by the words of Director Kiran (the producer and director of the film) “It’s a film not to prove ourselves but to establish the long-standing thought “Kabhi yahaan bhi film industry hoga”. From the point of view of the script, the film goes a little slow as far as the editing is concerned. However, the momentum catches up just before the intermission. Since the film has no songs so the background music scores attention. The cinematic manipulations were excellently portrayed by Sujay (Cinematographer). The only single song “Lamha Lamha”, which is evident that it has been planted into giving a melodic relief between the blood hungry cannibalism is no doubt can challenge a run for the money for even the Tollywood music directors.
Bhookh scores down heavily in the dubbing section, which is evident that the spoken words are of some amateur voice over artists, who could not come out of their mother tongue accent. The chasing sequence, the camaraderie of the characters, the frame by frame transition is highly appreciable. All the credit goes to Director Kiran. Debutant Sunny, the lead character was up in his toe to deliver the best in the film. So is the villain Gautam Deb (Not the minister). One of the biggest advantages of the film is that, once the viewers sit to see the film they will remain screwed till the last scene. That is the success of the makers of Bhookh – The Mystery. It’s truly a mystery to say why did you attempt and how did it win the battle. Overall, a good execution is done in Bhookh. Expecting more to come from the makers.
